Simple Sweet & Spicy BBQ Sauce

There is nothing better than a nice BBQ in the middle of winter.  There is, however, a chance there will not be any store bought BBQ sauce in the fridge.  No problem, run to the store…  Unless the nearest store is 45 minutes away.

Solution:  Make your own BBQ sauce with ingredients found in any kitchen.  This recipe calls for whiskey.  It can safely be left out, or substitute apple juice…. But why?

This is a simple stove top all purpose BBQ sauce.  It is great on beef, pork, or chicken.  The whiskey can be left out, or replaced with apple juice.

  • 2 Cups Ketchup
  • 2/3 Cup Crown Royal Or apple juice
  • 1/4 Cup Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar Packed
  • 2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 Can Tomato Paste
  • 1 Tbsp Chilli Powder
  • 1 Tbsp Smoked Paprika Or 1 tbsp liquid smoke
  • 1/2 Tbsp Kosher or Sea Salt
  • 1/4 Tsp Fresh Ground Pepper
  • 1 Medium Onion minced
  • 4 Cloves Garlic
  • Hot Sauce To taste
  1. In a saucepan, heat the whiskey, onion, and garlic cloves.  Simmer on medium heat until onion is translucent and whisky is almost evaporated.

  2. Ad all other ingredients and bring to a boil.  Once sauce is boiling, turn down the heat and let the sauce simmer for at least one hour.

  3. Use right out of pot hot, or allow to completely cool and store in the fridge.
